ENG 231 - American Literature I: Romanticism

This course covers selected works in American literature from its beginnings to 1865. Emphasis is placed on historical background, cultural context, and literary analysis of selected prose, poetry, and drama.

Romanticism in America

Romanticism began in Europe and made its way across the Atlantic to North America.  The movement appealed to American writers because it emphasized emotion rather than reason.  The ability of an individual to make their own decisions instead of following tradition was also appealing to American.  As a result, writers gave very private and intimate portrayals full of emotion and lacking on reason in their stories and poems.
