If we really want to address climate change, we need to make gender equity a reality, says writer and environmentalist Katharine Wilkinson. As part of Project Drawdown, Wilkinson has helped scour humanity's wisdom for solutions to draw down heat-trapping, climate-changing emissions: obvious things like renewable energy and sustainable diets and not so obvious ones, like the education and empowerment of women. Stonewall Uprising explores the dramatic events that launched a worldwide civil rights movement. When police raided a Mafia-run gay bar in Greenwich Village, the Stonewall Inn, on June 28, 1969, gay men and women did something they had not done before—they fought back. As the streets of New York erupted into violent protests and street demonstrations, the collective anger announced that the gay rights movement had arrived.

Narrated by Melissa Etheridge. In 1969 the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City's Greenwich Village, leading to three nights of rioting by the city's gay community. With this outpouring of courage and unity the Gay Liberation Movement had begun. After Stonewall, the sequel to Before Stonewall, chronicles the history of lesbian and gay life from the riots at Stonewall to the end of the century.

Gender identity is a person's internal sense of being male or female. The term "transgender" is often used to describe a wide range of identities that vary from the traditional understanding of gender. The American Psychiatric Association uses the term "gender dysphoria" as the medical diagnosis for people who feel their birth-assigned sex and their gender identity do not match. Many states, cities, and counties have laws that prohibit gender identity discrimination.

Gender non-conforming children--also known as gender variant, gender creative or gender independent--identify in ways that don't fit traditional gender roles. Transgender children and youth have become increasingly visible, as awareness and acceptance of transgender rights and gender identity issues have grown across society. While there is little reliable data on the numbers, experts estimate between 0.5 percent and 1.5 percent of teenagers are transgender, and the number of children visiting gender identity clinics is growing.
