Age discrimination is not a new phenomenon; however, it has become much more visible as populations age, especially in developed Western economies.

The Age Discrimination Act of 1975 prohibits discrimination on the basis of age in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. The Act, which applies to all ages, permits the use of certain age distinctions and factors other than age that meet the Act's requirements. The Age Discrimination Act is enforced by the Civil Rights Center.

In 1967 Congress passed the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) to protect employees and job applicants over age 40. The law prohibits labor organizations, state and local governments, and employers with 20 or more employees from discriminating based on age. Prohibited acts include depriving older employees employment opportunities or paying them less than younger workers. The ADEA was one of many civil rights laws passed in the 1960s.
