Faculty & Staff Library Support: Reserves

This is a quick guide for new and returning Faculty members to the services and resources offered by the Library

Reserves

High-demand items, such as required course readings, may be placed on Reserve to provide equal access for students. Items eligible for Reserve include books, AV material, articles, and equipment owned by the Library or a College instructor.

Instructors must submit the “Library Reserve Request” form along with the materials to be placed on reserve at least three (3) days prior to when students need access.

Things to Know!

  • Photocopied materials must comply with the United States Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S. Code). The instructor’s signature ensures that the Reserve material falls under the fair use guidelines or has obtained the appropriate copying permission.
  • Items borrowed through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) may not be placed on Reserve.
  • Complimentary books that have "Review Copy," "Examination Copy," "Instructor Copy," or similar wording printed on the book by the publisher may not be placed on Reserve without the publisher's permission. The instructor is responsible for obtaining the publisher’s permission in written format from a company agent authorized to extend usage rights (i.e., legal or copyright department).
  • Consumable materials, such as workbooks, exercise books, standardized test booklets, etc., will not be placed on Reserve since this violates the tenets of fair use by affecting market value.
  • Those requesting to place items on Reserve must have a current Rowan-Cabarrus identification card.
  • All materials will be reserved for In-Library USE ONLY unless otherwise requested by the instructor. Other loan periods and use policies may be available upon request.
  • Instructor-owned materials not picked up within three (3) months after the reserve period will automatically become the Library's property.
