How to Search For Books

Searching for books using the library's catalog is easy.

Some helpful steps to follow when searching the library's catalog include:

1.  You can set the location to your RCCC Campus (North, South, etc.) or you can search all of the RCCC libraries.

If the book you want is at another campus, use our Pick-It-Up Book Retrieval service to request the book.

2.  You can search by:

Words or phrase - general search

Subject - specific search

Title of the book

Author (last name, first name)

3.  Brainstorm some keywords to begin your search.  Not finding anything?  Books cover a lot of information.  You may need to broaden your search.  For example:

A search for Chihuahuas yields no results, but a search for books on dog breeds yields four results.  Look in the chapter list or index of a dog breed book for information on Chihuahuas.

4.  Click on the title of the book you want to retrieve the catalog record.

Item info will tell you how many copies are available, and at what campus.

The location tells you where the book is located in the library:

  • General Collection - Circulating books you can check out
  • Reference Material - In the reference section, for library use only
  • Reserve Desk - Behind the circulation desk, for library use only

The Call Number, a series of letters and numbers, tells you where to find it on the shelf (A-Z).

5.  The books in the library are organized by subject.  Once you have the call number, browse on the same shelf or area to find books on similar subjects.
